www.SampleRemix.com -- Interview with "Krank" -- Winning producer of our 2nd remix contest.

Q. How did you come up with the IDEA for your remix entry?

A. I had the sketch of a dark, pseudo-western song lying around. The Blackbird vocals, once stretched and transposed, fit pretty well.

Q. What software was used to create your entry?

A. Ableton Live 5. Effects include Amplitube and some non-commercial convolution plug-in.

Q. When did you start using Ableton Live?

A. Last year, as I started getting into making music elecronically.

Q.Is Ableton your main choice of music software?

A. Definately. It still has serious short-comings as a traditional, linear sequencer, but has so much else to make up for it.

Q. Did you use other programs before you chose Ableton Live?

A. Not really - I played around with Garageband and a couple of demos before deciding what to go for. Oh, and I used what must have been early versions of Cubase at some music schools I went to, back in 1997-98.

Q. What is your prefferred genre(s) of music to make?

A. So far I think most of what I've done falls outside conventional genres, containing elements of punk, breakbeat, avantgarde - the list goes on.

A. Do you play any musical instruments?

A. I've played guitar for a long time, and I can still be found practising scales and noodling around. I can play basic piano and fairly steady drums. I'm pretty well-versed in music theory, but I hardly use it consciously when making electronic music.

Q. Do you have a favorite hardware synth or instrument?

A. Like my Martin guitar? Ha - well, it sounds like such a tired cliché, but you could say the laptop is my main instrument.

Q. How long have you been producing electronic music?

A. Only about a year and a half. I've been more or less involved with playing music since my mid-teen years, but I found the studio/computer environment to represent a kind of geekiness that didn't suit me. I guess I was wrong there.

Q. How old are you?

A. I'm 29 years old.

Q. Do you use samples when making your own original music?

A. Yes, a lot. I often tweak them into something very different.

Q. Which music artists/bands influence you?

A. None in particular. I've been around the block in terms of taste - I'm from a very classically orientated home (both my parents were professors in musicology), so I rebelled by getting into death metal, then drum'n bass, drill'n bass. But I grow tired of cliches - I think I've developed a kind of anti-taste for music, especially what's popular and commercially successful. When occasionally I'll be in the mood to put on an album, it could be anything.

Q. Has your music been compared to any other artists/bands?

A. All over the place, from The Art Of Noise to Carl Nielsen (late Danish composer). My sister said she could still hear death metal in there.

Q. Anything else you might like to add?

A. Merely that I hope my contribution will be appreciated. Competitions like this are a great way for people to work their chops and get out there, so kudos to you guys for doing it.
