interview with "Rellik"
winner of a runner-up spot in our 4th remix contest

Q. How did you come up with the IDEA for your remix entry?

A. I ran through all the samples and then got to the task of editing/slicing/processing to get my basic skeleton of sounds and a drumkit to work with. Once I created the first riff, everything flowed from there very quickly and smoothly, and I just composed and added new samples and processing as I went.

Q. What software was used to create your entry?

A. FL Studio 7 along with its built-in sampler, slicer, and audio editor provided the core functionality - I also used a ton of free VST effects.

Q. When did you start using this software?

A. I guess around Winter 2002 I started playing with the demo for the first time - that was my first exposure to creating electronic music beyond basic MIDI sequencing with the soundcard's GM.

Q. Is this program your main choice of music software?

A. Yes, it is. In my experience, choice of music software is not really an important factor in an artist's output - there's a level of transparency in my working with FLS, though, that would take a while to rebuild if I were to switch to other software. If I were starting over again today, though, I would still choose FLS - workflow-wise and feature-wise, it's a great package, especially version 7.

Q. Did you use other programs before you chose this one?

A. Just an old Cakewalk MIDI sequencing app.

Q. What is your prefferred genre(s) of music to make?

A. I try not to limit myself - it's great musical exercise to go after different themes, genres, emotions, tones, etc. I would never want to tie myself down to being a "this" or "that" genre artist - but I do have a known predilection for breakbeats and catchy melodic stuff, as well as for more serious, moving stuff if it doesn't depress me too much.

Q. Do you play any musical instruments?

A. I play the keyboard and the clarinet.

Q. Do you have a favorite hardware synth or instrument?

A. Hm - my favorite instrument would have to be a huge pipe organ. What could be better than that? Not that I've ever played one.

Q. How long have you been producing electronic music?

A. It would be about 5 years now! Seems like a long time.

Q. How old are you?

A. 18 (and a half).

Q. Do you use samples when making your own original music?

A. I tend not to use one-shot WAV samples or loops in my music, except for building drumkits - I also slice loops occasionally to steal their sounds (what I do more often lately is I slice up loops I create myself, process, record, slice again, repeat). I use a lot of multisamples of real instruments, though, for pianos and guitars and basses and bells and orchestral work.

Q. Which music artists/bands influence you?

A. More than I could count, but I realize I have to choose just a few, so: how about The Beatles, Yoko Kanno, Daft Punk, Dream Theater, The Crystal Method, and Elliot Smith.

Q. Has your music been compared to any other artists/bands?

A. People have compared my individual tracks to other artists at times, but on the whole, I've never been told that my style bears any significant resemblance to another artist.

Q. How should you be contacted for remix/music production work?

A. Just e-mail me at Rellyk@gmail.com!

Q. What do you do (hobbies) when you are not making music?

A. I try to devote as much of my free time to music as I can, but I can't resist the pull of doing robotics research and helping to create computer games.

Q. What is your current favorite piece of electronic gear/gadget? (doesn't have to be related to music, could be your i-pod, cell phone, etc....)

A. I assume choosing my computer wouldn't count. Let's see... would have to be my Edirol PCR-80 MIDI controller, even though it has a broken high F# key.

Q. What is your favorite soda/beverage?

A. Diet Dr. Pepper! It tastes good, and it's not going to make me become fat and die, so I like it.

Q. Anything else you might like to add?

A. Just thanks for running this contest and for choosing to honor my entry! I had a lot of fun working on my track, and I'll encourage as many people as possible to join the next round. And congratulations to Beatslaughter for his extremely cool track!
